This week we speak with Sandra Bucerius is a professor in the sociology department at the University of Alberta. We kick off the discussion by talking about incarceration in Canada and compare it a little to incarceration in the United States. We also discuss subcultures and radicalization. Finally, we bring it all together by discussing a paper co-authored by Sandra discussing radicalization within prisons in Canada.

Great podcast and research. I spent almost three decades in Ontario prisons. I have to disagree with of the comments made about receiving healthcare inside that might be difficult to find in the community and I can tell you how substandard prison healthcare is. Prisoners lose OHIP status and receive privatized healthcare which is worse than it sounds. Pain meds are particularly hard to get inside because of the high instances of substance misuse among the population. Covid has been a nightmare
